Metal and Bone

There are not many things about ourselves that we can change, not many things we may change, some things that better stayed because they make us who we are. But there certainly are things that we can change and the means are justified. So, if you’ve ever thought about the need to get braces, now’s the time to talk to your dentist. If you’re a kid, a teen go get an appointment now and see what can be done about your crooked tooth or a big gap; and if you’re a grown up, better late than never.

I’ve been with braces for a while now, and here are 5 things that they have taught me so far.

1. Patience:
Braces is a long process. No one’s tooth is going to be fixed overnight. So, if you know someone who has had braces and now flashes a good smile, know that it took them years to get there. My tooth wont get fixed in a flash of time. These metals will be over my bone for a while. But well, the time will pass anyway, so getting the treatment was the better option.

2. Its never too late:
I got retainer as a kid but could not stick to it. So when I thought of getting braces it was a little later and I thought it was already late. But well, it turns out its never too late. Let your orthodontics do the thinking, and decide what would be appropriate for you.

3. Your body is stronger than you think:
Many of my friends have dropped the idea of braces itself because they were scared of the pain, they say. Well, to be honest it does hurt. As the dentist attached the metal wires and braces to my bones for the very first time, I was scared. The pressure of the wires; yes, its painful. But the pain actually goes away after a first week or soon. Mine took a little longer than a week.

Today I can eat all the things from my usual diet, I only avoid the hard ones so that the braces do not fall off.

4. Remember you’re doing it for yourself:
You’ll take the pain, keep the metal cemented over your bone for years and then wear the retainers for as long as you can. Never forget that you’re doing it for yourself, and not anybody else. After years the gap between my front two teeth has been closed, but the treatment isn’t over yet. There are other gaps to be closed. And during all these times I like to pose for photographs with a big smile and laugh my heart. #bracesarecool

5. The results will show:
Braces are slow, but the results will show. I still have the metal wires, but the gaps are closing day by day, month by month. The longer I hold on, the better the results. You will see that the gaps are closing, the tooth is getting straighter, and all these will make you feel better about all the pain and the metal.

Lastly, know that there is no one else like you. We’re all one piece.

P.S. Thanks to Sulav for the title ‘Metal and Bone’.

Also, teeth and bones of the body arent the same scientifically. Here, bone is a metaphor for the teeth.
